The Power of SELF

I was watching one of the Tamil channels on a Saturday morning [being a Saturday morning is very important because i normally get up very very late on weekends and on this particular day, i was awake]. There was a program called "intha naal iniya naal". One of the famous Tamil Orator was presenting some "thought for the day".

The crux of his topic was to explain the role of the family and society to groom the "self being" of an individual. Even if the family and society did not provide the support needed, the "self" should have the value to groom himself was the message. He quoted an example from Vivekananda's life. Well, it was a very good message and was motivating too - a nice way to start the day and in particular, a weekend.

After that, i was trying to assimilate the message conveyed. The intention of the orator was good and noone can deny any incident or learning from Vivekananda's life as he is one of the greatest Indians ever lived. However, i was little disappointed that we had only Vivekananda's life history to talk even after so many centuries.

I have read somewhere that the family, society, country that lives "only" with its heritage cannot succeed. How much of this is true in Indian context? we still quote life incidents from Vivekananda or Gandhi [that can be the latest we can for :( ]. We still refer to Rama's example for monogamy. We still refer to Gandhi for non-violence.

But, for a moment did we ever turn back to verify or validate if the situations hold the same now and then? Did we ever try to realize the reality and stop making comparison from the past or make statements from the history books?

We definitely have leaders in the likes of 'Dr. Abdul Kalam" who motivates the young generations to dream for a better future. But, for every 'Dr. Abdul Kalam' there are hundred on unknown faces who pull us down back with our rich culture and heritages from the past.

The very question is, who is going to bridge the gap? Who can shed the memories of the past, live in the present and realize the future? It can only be the "SELF" and no one else.

SELF HELP IS THE BEST HELP - what do you say?
